As far as i know they're only american, and i don't know any british equivalents. The two possibilities were saying someone was a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or they were in 9th,. If not, how can i say it without specifying which university?

Je sais que c'est en lien avec l'école secondaire mais je ne comprend pas. It seems that freshman year is used to mean first year even for girls as in the following examaple: To the girl who's about to start her freshman year. I never heard anything like that when i was in high school quite a few years ago.
